The twelfth newsletter (September 22, 2002)

Greetings, pals'n'gals!

It certainly has been a while since we muddied up your inbox with one of our inane AYC newsletters? Well, now that the moving dust has settled, and we're unpacking the last of our boxes, we're raring to go with a lengthy list of newsy tidbits. So what say we skip the formalities and get right down to bizness?...

*** ANGRY YOUTH COMIX #4, OUT IN OCTOBER! *** You heard it here first! Head to the comix shop in mid/late October for what we believe is the best issue of ANGRY YOUTH COMIX to date. AYC #4 contains FIVE brand-new stories, including: THE AYC HALLOWEEN CREEP-OUT, COMIC BOOK SCHOOL, HIPLER (written with none other than Peter Bagge!), WEIGHTLIFTING GOPHERS, and the crowd-pleasing FUCK & SHIT! Featuring a Kirbyesque cover that will knock your socks off while forcing your lunch up. See a preview here: http://www.saltymagazine.com/ayc4.html As always, AYC is available from Fantagraphics Books: http://www.fantagraphicsbooks.com If you don't see it at your local retailer, shame the no-count bastards into ordering it! You'll be glad you did.

*** "PORTAJOHNNY" BOOK RELEASE SCHEDULE *** In case you missed the good news last time around, Fantagraphics will be collecting Johnny's long out-of-print, self-published comix in a softcover book! Entitled PORTAJOHNNY, it clocks in around 160 pages and collects the best of his early Angry Youth Comix, as well as a few stories which appeared in various anthologies. An introduction by the patron saint of puke comix, Peter Bagge, guarantees that extra touch of hilarity that makes PORTAJOHNNY an absolute must-have! It will be available in April 2003-- but don't worry, we'll remind you.

*** MINICOMIX GO MAXI *** Fans of Johnny's limited edition "Shouldn't You Be Working?" minis-- which consist entirely of drawings he's done while on the clock at various boring day jobs-- will be happy to hear that Fantagraphics will be publishing a collection of them in February 2003, in full-on comic format. The originals are drawn on 8.5 x 11" paper, as opposed to the one-image-per-page format of the minis, so you'll definitely be getting more bang for your buck. (Remember to check http://www.johnnyr.com 'til then for your weekly fix of sketch & doodle fun.)

*** "THE GAYTRIOT" PRANCES INTO THE COMICS JOURNAL! *** If you missed Johnny's contribution to the "Summer Special" Comics Journal Special Edition (the colorful new square-bound, oversize-format "coffee table" books Fantagraphics is publishing biannually) don't make the same mistake twice! Johnny has just completed a new two-page, *full-color* story for their upcoming Winter Edition. The theme of this issue is "Patriotism" and we guarantee you'll be dazzled by the adventures of the Gaytriot: "America's Most Scrumptious Superhero"! Look for it at a retailer near you, or check out http://www.tcj.com for more info.

*** ALL WORK AND NO MONEY MAKE JOHNNY SOMETHING SOMETHING *** Johnny's been working like a madman on comix since arriving in sunny L.A., yet his bank account has been dwindling like an emaciated, wannabe starlet. Ah, the glamorous life of an "ink stud"! Won't you please buy some original artwork so he can keep up his (generic-brand) Coke habit? We've added heaps of new stuff to his page on the Comic Art Collective-- including several Nickelodeon gags, a HUSTLER cartoon, and other assorted illos-- so check it out! http://www.comicartcollective.com/johnnyryan/ FYI: Johnny takes PayPal, money orders, and good ol' American checks. {/end plea for money}

*** JOHNNY GOES APE IN "MAAKIES"! *** Readers of Tony Millionaire's ultra-popular weekly strip MAAKIES may have noticed Johnny's appearance in last month's strip. If you missed it, it's not too late! Here's the trilogy of strips for you (all for sale at http://www.maakies.com), in handy hyperlink format. We start off with a gag Johnny provided Tony with...yet neglected to wrap up with a punchline. The second strip finds a confused Uncle Gabby seeking "closure" from an elusive Millionaire. Johnny wraps things up in the third strip, with his own rendition of Tony's beloved, booze-soaked characters. Read up, then buy a Drinky Crow figurine (http://www.maakies.com/str/index.html) so you can act it out at home. Strip 1) http://www.maakies.com/archive/m392.html Strip 2) http://www.maakies.com/archive/m394.html Strip 3) http://www.maakies.com/archive/m395.html

*** DAVE COOPER & JOHNNY RYAN vs DC COMICS *** Those of you who saw last year's BIZARRO book-- a collection from DC Comics featuring "alternative" creators skewing famous characters like Batman and Superman-- will be glad to know they're releasing a BIZARRO 2, out sometime next year. This time around, WEASEL's Dave Cooper (http://www.davegraphics.com) and our own Johnny Ryan have teamed up for a TEN-page Wonder Woman vs. Supergirl story which is sure to have the nerds rollin' in the aisles. Johnny wrote the story, and Dave will be bringing it to life in his dementedly beautiful style. (Rumor has is Dave will be basing WW and SG on his & Johnny's own galpals!) Further info will come as we get it ourselves...

*** LOWJINX #4: IT'S A WISE CHILD *** We'd like to draw your attention to the latest comix anthology published by indie darling Kurt Wolfgang, who brought you the notoriously funny "LOWJINX #3: THE BIG RIP-OFF". His newest issue is a collection of comix done by some of the underground's greatest creators (Jordan Crane, Ivan Brunetti, Sam Henderson, Steven Weissman) back when they were mini-nerds...ie: when they were KIDS! If that ain't a great gimmick, we don't know what is. Each issue is hand-colored by an actual child, to boot. The cover boasts a lovely drawing by Kevin "Sugar Booger" Scalzo, with a true-to-life back cover by Johnny Ryan. This is a limited edition release, and we're not sure where these are available yet, so check out the site and drop Kurt a line for more info: http://members.aol.com/NOEFIEPUB/

*** GOD HATES CARTOONS...BUT WE LOVE 'EM! *** Hey, you still awake? Good, cuz we wanna tell you about a great new DVD that just came out from our friends at Bright Red Rocket. GOD HATES CARTOONS is a spanking-new collection of animated shorts from some of the best names in the biz: Tony Millionaire, Tim Maloney, Sam Henderson, Walt Holcombe, Ivan Brunetti, Kaz, and more! If you've ever wondered what it would be like to see "Lonely Robot Duckling" or "Diaper Dyke" in wacky cartoon form, here's your chance! The DVD features a cover by Tony Millionaire as well as artist bios, easter eggs, and more. It's available on their website (http://www.brightredrocket.com) and priced just right for holiday gift-giving. If you're going to be in the L.A. area on Friday 9/27, head to Meltdown Comics (http://www.meltcomics.com) to have your copy signed! (How does this DVD relate to Johnny, you ask? Buy enuff copies and they may release another, thus providing a home for the animated short Johnny has just started. It's called UNITARD and is a heartwarming tale about a sweet, retarded Unicorn. It's gonna make "I Am Sam" look like "Ernest Goes to Jail". No, really!)

*** NEW CONTACT INFO *** Just a reminder, this is NOT Johnny's personal email account. If you'd like to write him, please use superjohnny69@yahoo.com. If you'd like to send him something, here's the new address: Johnny Ryan 1031 Sanborn Ave. Los Angeles, CA 90029

That's gonna do it for now! Thanks, as always, for your interest...and if you ever wanna unsubscribe, just reply to this email with "PISS OFF" in the subject line. We promise not to cry. Much.
