The second newsletter

Greetings, pals'n'gals!

Welcome to the first post-earthquake edition of the Johnny Ryan/Angry Youth Comix newsletter. In case you haven't heard (and if you haven't, pick up a freaking newspaper already) our fair state (Washington, genius) was just hit with a 6.8-level earthquake. We're doing a-okay, despite the fact that our Ned Flanders doll was thrown violently to the floor and now we can't find his godforsaken glasses. *SOB!* We'll get over it somehow...we guess.

If you're new to the list, heyhowareya? Nice to have ya.

Anyhow, just writing to update y'all on the happenings in AYC Land. And awaaaay we go.

* San Francisco's Alternative Press Expo (codename: APE) went smashingly, with Angry Youth Comix being the third-bestselling book at the Fanta table, just behind Pete Bagge's (great, must-have) HATE! Annual and the debut issue of (the kick-ass) Love & Rockets, Vol.2. Johnny did lots of sketches and signed many a comic, and also got to meet a lot of really great people. One of them being Juliette Torrez, the fab gal who puts together those adorable little 'Kapow!' poetry books, illustrated by great artists like Steven Weissman, Sam Henderson, and Ivan Brunetti. You can probably tell where this is going: Johnny will be illustrating Juliette's next book, to debut at July's Comicon. More details as they become available!

* Many thanks to our hosts in SF & LA, and special thanks to Kaz for throwing us a wonderful little shindig! You are all way too kind. Keep it comin'!

* On Saturday, February 24, Johnny and multimedia superstar Pete Bagge did a signing at Olympia, WA's Danger Room Comics. Fantagraphics PR honcho Eric Reynolds and Angry Youth Girlfriend Jenny Nixon looked on in bemused horror as Johnny and Pete were forced by Danger Room management to 'predict the futures' of audience members as if they were a character in their comic book(s). That uncomfortableness aside, the event went quite well, with plenty of comics signed and some funny, if completely nonsensical, 'jam' comic strips drawn by the fearsome twosome. Kudos!

* Saturday, March 10, Ryan and Bagge will team up yet again for a signing at downtown Seattle's Zanadu comics (1923 Third Ave., 1-3pm). No supernatural hoodoo-voodoo events are planned for this signing, but you never know. At any rate, it's a great opportunity to gladhand with two durn-funny fellas. Bring comics you'd like signed and babies who need kissin'. If you'd like more information--or just need to find a reliable source for Prince Albert in a Can -- call Zanadu at (206)443-1316.

* This week Johnny was interviewed by GEAR magazine, the Bob Guccione, Jr.-owned 'lad mag' currently featuring WB starlet Nikki Cox (Um, WHY isn't a woman with this name in the porn biz?). Look for a page (!) on Angry Youth Comix in the April issue. No word yet on when Johnny gets his screen-test for 'Caligula 2: Electric Boogaloo'--we're waaaaaiting, Bobby!

* A quick heads-up: if you haven't already bought a copy of Kurt Wolfgang's new LowJinx, boy are you a dummy! It's the 'Big Rip-Off' issue, wherein artists parody other artists...anonymously! I can't tell you which strip Johnny did, but I can tell you that it--and the book as a whole--is hilarious. By equal turns mean, funny, and thought-provoking (no, really!). Get it!

* Lastly, let us introduce our new feature: LOADY'S LINKZ! Every time you get one of these newsletters, we'll be highlighting one of our favorite websites. Today we bring your attention to http://www.kevinscalzo.com. Kevin's full-color minicomic Sugar Booger was a big hit at APE, and rightly so. His drawings are so goofy, so cute, and so gross we can hardly believe it! Buy or die!

That's about it for now! As always, if you wish to be removed from this list, simply hit 'Reply' and type 'PLEASE REMOVE' in the subject line. (But you really shouldn't do so unless you want to see a grown man cry.)

Toodle-oo!
