The third newsletter (May 2, 2001)
Greetings, old timers!
And welcome aboard, recent subscribers! Glad to have ya.
It's been a while since our last newsletter, but there's good reason. Namely, we got cable! Haw haw, just kidding. (Sort of...those 'Before They Were Stars' shows on VH1 are pretty addicting.) Seriously, though, the real reason behind our delay is that we've been busy getting the AYC website (http://www.johnnyr.com) ready for public consumption. Well, the time has come! Head on over and check out the following:
* In the BIO section, you'll find a terrifying photo of Johnny plastered with faux-acne and wearing a tattered Dave Mustaine wig. Yow! If you get all Nancy Drew and look deeper, though, you will find an actual bio of him on this page that is 100% true. Good luck, scouts! http://www.johnnyr.com/johnny/
* In the COMICS section, an exhaustive bibliography complete with illustrations. For example, click here to see the first-ever drawings of Sinus and Loady (and be prepared to laugh). http://www.johnnyr.com/comix/bibFirstSandL.html Don't say we didn't warn you!
* Also in COMICS is our new weekly feature: "Shouldn't You Be Working?" Following the premise of Johnny's short-run minicomics of the same name, this is where we feature a new gag or doodle that Johnny has scrawled while toiling away at his day job. Look for a new one every Monday (and if you miss a week, check the Archive!).
* In NEWS, you'll find all the latest reviews and interviews. Our most recent additions: three (count 'em!) stellar reviews AYC received in the magazines GLUE (An amusing Los Angeles city guide), GEAR (Bob Guccione Jr.'s new boobs-and-beers mag) and ALTERNATIVE PRESS (Music mag w/Weezer on the cover -- how appropriate!). Excellent! We've also just added Johnny's challenging but positive interview with Comicstore.com honcho Paul S. Harrington. Lotsa reading!
* Also in NEWS, you'll find archived versions of this here e-list (where you new subscribers can check out the old news), as well as a link web surfers can use to subscribe. Receiving mass e-mails has never been so easy...or so FUN!
Anyway, you get the point. There's loads of fun to be had over at http://www.johnnyr.com, thanks in no small part to the efforts of webmaster Jeff Voris. We worship you, Jeff. Thank God for computer nerds, eh kids?
We should also note that within a week or two, we'll be adding a 'Fan Art' section to the site! We were inspired to do so after receiving two HILARIOUS sketches of AYC characters Loady McGee and Sinus O'Gynus from poster artist extraordinaire Coop! (http://www.coopstuff.com) Rumors are running wild that new AYC-inspired drawings are on the way from cartoonland genius-types Tony Millionaire, Ivan Brunetti and Danny Hellman! Want to add your Ryan-inspired artwork to the site? Send it to us at loadymcgee@yahoo.com, subject: Fan Art.
In other news, Johnny remains hard at work on AYC #2, which is scheduled to debut at July's Comic-Con (http://www.comic-con.org). Whether it actually does or not is hard to say, but progress has been steady and he's even taking a week off in May to devote entirely to drawing, so keep your fingers crossed. Regardless of the book's status, Johnny will be spending a week in LA and San Diego during Comic-Con, so if you plan on attending be sure and stop by the Fantagraphics booth and say hello.
That's all for this go-round of the AYC e-list. As always, if you'd like to be removed from the list just reply to this message with 'unsubscribe' in the subject line. Otherwise, if this Inbox is rockin', don't come a-knockin'!
