The fifth newsletter (July 6, 2001)

Hey, everybody!

Hope you're enjoying your summer. We just thought we'd take a break from smoothing self-tanner on our ass and drinking mint juleps on the veranda to update y'all on the latest happenings 'round here. So here ya go...

* The big news is that it looks like AYC #2 *will* be out in time for the San Diego Comic-Con! It's 99.9% likely, though not 100% official yet-- in other words, don't hold us to it cuz we'll deny everything. Everything was completed last week and it's at the printer as we speak, so it's lookin' good. The top brass at Fantagraphics has told us that people wishing to pre-order the book to pick up at SD can do so by phoning 1-800-657-1100. (That phone # is also good for those of you who just wanna mail-order the damn thing but don't want to have to go to an embarrassing, Klingon-filled comic convention to get it.) If you'd like to take a gander at the new cover, go to http://www.johnnyr.com -- it's right there on the home page! (Be sure and click on the cover to see it at full-size...EEW. Thanks to Angry Youth Girlfriend Jenny Nixon for the disgusto coloring job.)

* Johnny's work also appears in 3 non-Fantagraphics releases making their debut at SD. 1) He illustrated the Kapow! books poetry chapbook "Weird Bob" (available at the Last Gasp table-- preview the art at http://www.comicartcollective.com/johnnyryan), 2) The Expo 2001 book (with beautiful Dan Clowes cover) features an oldie-but-goodie story of Johnny's entitled "The Nudist", and 3) Danny Hellman's thick, juicy anthology book Legal Action Comics has an 8-pg story of Johnny's called "The Idiot" (available at the Alternative Comics table). Betcha can't collect 'em all!

* AYC completists will wanna get their hands on the new button Johnny had made especially for San Diego. It's a fancy 1" button featuring the goofily-grinning lardbucket "Fat Piggum" in blazing full-color! Sinus O'Gynus and Loady McGee buttons are still available as well. If you're at the Con, they're free with purchase-- otherwise, send $1 to Johnny R, PO Box 22277, Seattle WA 98122-0277. Killer, dude!

* This month's Nickelodeon Magazine (August 2001, Rugrats cover) features a cheeky li'l Johnny Ryan gag cartoon on page 50...which is reprinted on page 89 as part of a contest entry. Thanks to the kind and benevolent C. Duffy for the heads-up! (Don't miss the appearance of Angry Youth Pal Kevin "Sugarbooger" Scalzo on page 44!)

* Johnny's signing schedule for San Diego hasn't been confirmed yet, but we can tell you that he'll be around all day Saturday and Sunday (July 21 & 22). He will most likely be signing with the Legal Action Comics crew at the Alternative Comics table sometime Saturday morning/early afternoon, and spending the rest of his time at the Fantagraphics booth. We hope this information will prove helpful for all your nerd-stalking needs.

* Don't forget to bring your big, fat wallets along...as Johnny will be toting around a portfolio full of original art for your impulse-buying pleasure. You can see a mere portion of his stuff at http://www.comicartcollective.com/johnnyryan, but to see it all you gotta come to the convention! You poor thing.

* San Diego will also mark the debut of "Shouldn't You Be Working?" #4-- Johnny's sporadically-published, low-print-run minicomic collections made up of retarded doodles he does at work. (See a review of the lastSYBW? collection-- as well as AYC#11, the last self-published issue-- at http://www.tcj.com/234/r_minimal.html . Many thanks to the incredibly astute wordsmith Tom Spurgeon for the kind reviews!) If you're not attending the con but would like an issue, send $1 to Johnny at the address listed above. Get it while you can, supplies are limited and it won't be reprinted! (Don't forget that you can also see weekly work-doodles by checking http://www.johnnyr.com/comix/index.html every Monday.)

* Speaking of website doodles, check out www.johnnyr.com's rapidly-growing Fan Art page at http://www.johnnyr.com/comix/fanArt.html! Our newest additions include a full-color drawing by "Dirty" Danny Hellman as well as THREE pieces by the incomparable Steven "Ribs" Weissman! Remember, you don't hafta be a fancy-shmancy comic artist to contribute. Send in your drawings today!

That's it from us. If you don't want to get these messages anymore, just hit reply and type "unsubscribe" in the subject line. We'll understand...*SNIFF*.

Have a nice trip! See ya next fall!
